Man who killed Uyinene sentenced to three life terms

The National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape says it's happy at the three life sentences imposed on former Post Office worker, Luyanda Botha, who pleaded guilty to raping and killing UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana.

Botha was jailed in the Western Cape High Court on Friday in terms of a plea agreement with the state.

NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, says he received life for each of the two counts of rape and a further life sentence on a count of murder.

He says Botha also received a five-year jail sentence for defeating the ends of justice for trying to destroy evidence by cleaning his car.

Mrwetyana's murder made national headlines earlier this year and sparked the #AmINext movement.

She was originally from East London where her family still lives.
