Man survives traumatic amputation from industrial machine

A 27-year-old man was seriously injured when he was pulled into an industrial machine in an industrial park in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said on Saturday.

Shortly before 6am, paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found the man still trapped in the machinery, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“His leg was completely pulled into parts of the machinery and paramedics found that he sustained a traumatic amputation.”

Maintenance workers on the scene managed to remove parts of the machinery for paramedics to gain access. Paramedics assessed the man and found that he was in a critical condition and initiated advanced life support treatment.

They managed to control the severe bleeding and remove the man from the machinery. He was then transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for emergency surgery.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not yet known. It was believed the man was trapped for over an hour before rescuers managed to free him, Vermaak said.
