A man miraculously escapes with his life after his truck smashed onto the Umgababa river bridge this afternoon. Reports indicate that the driver of the truck was traveling south bound on the N2 at around 14h00, as he passed through a road construction area the man lost control of the vehicle collided with the concrete barriers and then ploughed into the river bridge.
The driver managed to escape from the wreckage just as it burst into flames, and from the remains of the cab he was fortunate to escape with his life. Netcare 911paramedics arrived at the scene and found the truck with a load of bath soap totally engulfed in flames.
Medics treated the man on scene for minor injuries, but he refused to be taken to hospital, firemen battled the blaze for some time before managing to extinguish the inferno. The roadway was closed for several hours while the truck was burning and salvage operation was in progress.
