A 76-year-old man allegedly blew himself up with fireworks on Monday after being summoned to the Visagie Street Municipal Court in Pretoria to attend a case concerning a protection order.
“At around 08:00, witnesses saw him standing in the passage and taking out something that they thought was a cigarette. He put it in his mouth and when he lit it, it blew up in his face,” a statement from the Tshwane Metro Police said.
“It was later found that he had blown himself up with fireworks, but no one else was injured.”
The man was declared dead on the scene.
Spokesman for the Tshwane Metropolitan Police, Isaac Mahamba said: “Investigators are investigating whether the fireworks had been tampered with. The municipal court in Visagie Street has been closed for the day, as the police are still securing the scene for further investigations.”
