One person was killed and three others injured in a crash on Curie Avenue in Bloemfontein on Sunday, emergency services said.
ER24 said the man died of internal injuries sustained when the vehicle he and the others were travelling in crashed into a concrete road partition.
The impact tore the vehicle apart leaving the engine separated from the wreck.
One of the three 20-year-old passengers was critically injured, and the other two moderately.
They were taken to hospitals for further care.
