The NSPCA has welcomed the effective one-year sentence imposed on a Dobsonville man following his conviction for animal cruelty.
NSPCA spokesperson, Mandy Cattenach, says Jabu Mtshali, was sentenced in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court earlier in December.
He was charged with 21 counts of animal cruelty related to the brutal assault of a greyhound using a knobkierie.
She said 21 dogs and puppies were removed from the property in Dobsonville including some chickens.
Catenach said that a person living in the area filmed Mtshali beating the dog and submitted the grim footage to the NSPCA.
"A warrant was obtained. Roodepoort SPCA personnel went to the property accompanied by two members of the SAPS. The conditions in which dogs were being kept on the property was appalling. The enclosures were swampy with urine and faeces, from which the ammonia burnt the eyes of the SPCA personnel. The smell was over powering," she said.
Catenach said the magistrate also barred Mtshali from ever owning an animal again.
