A man from Gauteng is in police custody after opening up a false case of cellphone robbery.
Spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele says the 28-year-old was charged for perjury after he told police on Tuesday that he was robbed of his Huawei Blush Gold Nova 8 worth R11 000.
He says when detectives accompanied the complainant to show them where he was robbed he changed the details of his complaint to another crime scene.
Captain Mbele says when detectives took him to view CCTV footage the complainant refused, again changing his story by stating that his phone was stolen at a local tavern.
A further investigation by police revealed that the man opened a similar case of robbery in November last year when he allegedly submitted an insurance claim.
Captain Mbele says the man was subsequently arrested and charged with perjury.
