A 26-year-old man spent a night in prison following his arrest for possession of abalone and bribery.
Police spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu says the suspect was arrested in Laesonia, West of Pretoria on Tuesday in a multidisciplinary operation involving the Hawks.
She says police conducted a search of the man's business premises and found several boxes of abalone stuffed in freezers.
Captain Mulamu said when officers arrested the man he offered them a bribe of R10 000 to let him go.
Police confiscated the abalone and the cash.
The value of the seized abalone is not yet known.
The suspect will appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court on Wednesday for contravening the Living Marice Resources act and enticement.
