Cape Town police have arrested a 31-year old man for being in possession of abalone worth an estimated R1.1 million.
Police spokesperson, Noloyiso Rwexana says members of the K-9 unit were patrolling in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, near Gordon’s Bay on Tuesday afternoon, when they noticed a heavily laden bakkie swerving on the road.
She says they followed the vehicle in the direction of Cape Town and pulled it from the road near Gordon`s Bay.
Rwexana says more than 6 800 units of de-shelled perlemoen packed in bags were confiscated.
The driver was arrested and is due to appear in the Strand Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
