Man arrested at airport for drugs worth R6m

A foreign national has been arrested at OR Tambo International after he arrived to collect a bag containing 20kg of ephedrine, worth more than R6-million.

Officials said the bag from Dar es Salaam was intercepted by customs officials this week.

SA Revenue Service spokesperson, Sandile Memela, said the crystal-like substance tested positively for ephedrine, a principal ingredient of crystal meth.

The man arrived at the airport yesterday, saying he wanted to collect a bag.

When he approached customs officials to claim the bag, he was asked to sign for a delivery receipt.

Memela said as soon as the man signed for the bag, he was arrested.Memela says last week customs officials intercepted an unaccompanied bag from India containing five bags of crystal meth valued at R8.1-million at the OR Tambo International Airport.

He says the drugs were handed to the police for further investigation.
