A 49-year-old Magistrate is expected to appear in the Carltonville Magistrates court on Monday to face charges of corruption.
A spokesperson for the Hawks Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says it is alleged that the Magistrate demanded a bribe from two suspects who were arrested for alleged theft last week.
He allegedly approached the suspects' colleague and demanded that the two women pay him a certain amount in exchange for releasing the two during their next court appearance.
The Hawks set up a sting operation and arrested the Magistrate on Thursday.
The head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya welcomed the arrest. He says even though all people are innocent until proven otherwise, Magistrates are expected to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner.
