A man from Thabanaswana Village in Sekgosese was burnt to death by members of his community, Limpopo police said on Monday.
Lt-Col Ronél Otto said 50-year-old Enock Ramalobela was stoned, beaten with sticks, doused with petrol and then burnt with a tire on Sunday night.
He was accused of murdered a 14-year-old girl.
His wife was also doused with petrol, but was rescued by police officers when they arrived at the scene.
The woman and her three children, two boys and a girl, were then rushed to a safe location, Otto said.
She said residents also attacked police and threw stones at their vehicles.
Mahlatse Mendy Ramalobela's body was found in a disused house last week. She went missing on October 10 while on her way to school.
Limpopo police commissioner, Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe, condemned the attack on the family and the subsequent murder, and warned members of the community against taking the law into their own hands.
"Should they [the community] have any information with regard to crimes being committed in their area, they are urged to contact the local police station, or call the complaints hotline number," he said. (Sapa)
