A 43-year-old police officer from Limpopo appeared in court on Friday facing six counts of murder in an insurance scam in which she had claimed R10 million.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Sergeant Rachel Kutumela appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court following her arrest on Thursday.
The NPA said she also faces 12 charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
NPA spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi Dzhangi, said she is alleged to have taken out insurance policing on various victims and “has since claimed R10 million as a sole beneficiary” from various institutions that include ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Hollard Insurance, Assupol, Old Mutual, Onelife and Clientele.
She said the murderous scam began in 2019 when the bodies of people who she had insured were found in different areas.
The matter was postponed to 18 October for bail application.
