Legendary boxing trainer Nick Durandt dies after motorcycle accident

CAPE TOWN, April 21 (ANA) – Legendary boxing trainer Nick Durandt has passed away after a motorcycle accident near Clarens in the Free State on Friday afternoon.

Damien Durandt, his son, was with him when he died in a Bethlehem hospital.

Durandt, 53, has written his name indelibly in the annals of South African boxing since he has produced more champions than any other trainer in the country, in a career spanning close on to 30 years. He produced close on to 100 SA champions.

Last year he retired from the fight game to pursue business interests.

Durandt arrived in the country as a youngster when his family emigrated to South Africa. His father Cliff Durandt played professional football for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic.

He first learned his trade as a boxing trainer under the guidance of former multiple South African and Empire champion Willie Toweel. – African News Agency (ANA)
