Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says 18 learners and one educator are among the more than 340 people who have perished in the floods in KwaZulu Natal.
She said a team of senior managers has been dispatched to support the Provincial Education Department in assessing the damage caused to more than 240 schools.
KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala, on Thursday announced that the death toll had climbed to 341, with the majority of the deaths in eThekwini.
Meanwhile, locals and holidaymakers who were hoping to spend the Easter weekend swimming at Durban's beaches have had their plans dashed.
Durban Tourism said the city's beaches are closed, and according to the Agency’s head, Phillip Sitole, 16 percent of Easter weekend bookings were cancelled.
He said they were expecting around 86 000 holidaymakers in the province, but that has gone down to around 50 000.
More rain is expected over the Easter weekend, raising fears that the death toll may rise further.
