Western Cape Transport and Public Works Minister Daylin Mitchell has condemned Tuesday’s taxi-related shootings in Ceres in which five taxi operators were killed.

This latest incident of taxi violence brings the total number of taxi-related murders in the Western Cape to 45 since the start of the calendar year.

Attempted murders and injuries now stand at 19 over the same period.

Five taxi operators who are thought to be affiliated with the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) were shot and killed at the Vredebes Taxi Rank near Nduli on Tuesday.

No suspects have been identified and the matter is being investigated by the Police Provincial Detective Unit.

Mitchell strongly condemns these killings and said he would take all necessary steps available within his mandate to ensure that public transport commuters are safe.
