LATEST on search for missing 'hijacked' baby

A reward has been offered for information leading to the recovery of one-month-old baby girl Siwaphiwe, according to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Lt-Col Thulani Zwane.

“A reward of up to R250,000 is offered to anyone who may provide [police] with information that will lead to the recovery of the baby and the arrest and conviction of the suspects,” Zwane said on Saturday.

More than 100 police officers assisted by community and other role players were deployed to search for the child.

Siwaphiwe was abducted during a hijacking in Greyville on Friday afternoon. Zwane said the child was in a car with her mother Sibongile Mbambo and her eight-year-old brother at City View Mall when two armed men accosted them.

“They demanded the vehicle keys, forced mother and son out of the vehicle, and sped off in her Toyota Yaris with the baby girl inside. A case of car hijacking was opened at Durban Central police for investigation.

“The vehicle was later recovered at the corner of Moodie and Donovan Roads in Montclair without the baby inside. Police are urging community members who witnessed the incident or who know the whereabouts of the baby to urgently contact the nearest police [station]. Crime Stop can also be contacted on 08600-10111,” he said.
