Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant says violence undermines the genuine demands of striking workers.
She says there is no reason whatsoever for industrial action to be accompanied by violence as South Africa's laws guarantee the right to protest.
Oliphant also condemned recent reports of violence in New Germany,KwaZulu-Natal, where a petrol attendant was seriously injured in an altercation, believed to be strike-related.
She also called for negotiations to resume under the auspices of the CCMA in the strike in the petrol and motor retail sector.
Yesterday, NUMSA said negotiations with employers had so-far yielded no results but that plans for talks to resume were underway.
