KZN trio get heavy sentences for murder

Three men who stabbed a man to death in the Drakensview area of Estcourt last year have been given heavy sentences by the Pietermaritzburg High Court, police in KwaZulu-Natal reported on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said that on the evening of 11 February 2016, Leonara Walugembe, 38, was stabbed by three men at his residence in Drakensview. He was with his girlfriend at the time. She sustained a stab wound when tried to intervene and ward off the attack.

Mbhele said Walugembe sustained close to 20 stab wounds in the attack. Two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the premises.

Police were informed and a case of murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances was opened and detectives managed to track down two of the three suspects in the Estcourt area. The third suspect later handed himself over to detectives.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court recently sentenced Hendy Couch, 37, to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for robbery. Velaphi Ernest Sikhakhane, 32, and Thembinkosi Thubalakhe Ngubane, 25, were both sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for murder and 15 years imprisonment for robbery.
