Kwazulu Natal police condemned the torching of a police vehicle in Chatsworth in Durban in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said police vehicles were also stoned by residents.
He said POPS members were providing support to officers from the eThekwini district task team while tracking wanted suspects.
Netshiunda said while the officers were busy on foot, a “group of counter-productive residents” set fire to a police vehicle and stoned another.
He said two people were arrested and are due to appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, KZN commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said that the destruction of police resources is a direct attack on the authority of the state.
"Community members always complain about the lack of police resources, which is a genuine concern, but there are those who seek to cripple the police service so that they can continue with their reign of terror," he said.
The incident in Chatsworth comes barely 24 hours after nine suspects were shot dead in a gun battle with police in Marianhill in Durban on Wednesday.
