The police in KwaZulu Natal killed two suspected hitmen in a shootout in the Zululand District on Wednesday evening.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the two were driving in a red VW Polo, and were allegedly on their way to assassinate a taxi owner at Mahlabathini.
He added that police spotted their vehicle on the P700 road in Mahlabathini, and instructed the driver to stop.
Netshiunda said he then stopped in the middle of the road, and opened fire on the police, who returned fire, killing the two occupants.
Three firearms and ammunition were found in the possession of the suspects while preliminary investigations revealed that one of the firearms was reported stolen at Macekane Reserve in Mtunzini in January.
Police said the weapons would be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they are linked to any crimes in and around the province.
