A man died and five other people were injured on Thursday afternoon, when they were struck by lightning outside a shop in Wartburg, KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that paramedics were called to the scene by the local authorities.
“Upon arrival, paramedics found five people sitting under a tree with a number of onlookers crowded nearby. Paramedics assessed one man, believed to be in his late 20s, and found that he had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on the scene. Five other patients were found with only minor injuries.”
