KZN hostage drama ends tragically

RUSA

A six-hour hostage drama in Mountview in Verulam in Kwazulu Natal ended tragically with the death of a 65-year-old man.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa, RUSA, which responded to the call from local residents, the incident took place in Jacaranda Avenue when the man entered the home of a relative and held hostage a 68-year-old woman, her 38-year-old daughter and two grandsons, aged 12 and 18.

RUSA said their officers were able to negotiate the release of the 18-year-old who had sustained a gunshot wound to the hand.

The security company said, “according to the hostage taker, he suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair” and that her daughter had knowledge of, and was in support of the relationship.

RUSA said the unemployed truck driver, who was an uncle of the wounded teenager, requested that his wife be brought to the scene and allowed to enter the home, but this was denied by police as they believed that he wanted to shoot her.

“At approximately 18:12, SAPS officials breached the front door. The body of the suspect was located in a bedroom. He sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest."
