Kwazulu Natal Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has expressed her condolences to the families who lost loved ones during recent flooding in parts of the province.
The provincial government said this was a result of the Bellspruit River bursting its banks during heavy rain on Christmas Eve, leading to several vehicles being swept away and people reported missing.
The Premier said the floods caused severe damage to infrastructure and several vehicles were swept away.
“According to the information gathered by our disaster teams, a double cab was carrying nine passengers. Three (3) of them were found deceased inside the vehicle, while the other six are still missing”.
Two other vehicles, each with two people inside, were also swept away by the fast-flowing water, resulting in two deaths and two people still missing.
Ncube-Dube said KZN emergency response teams were working tirelessly to assist affected communities.
She said the SA Weather Service has also issued a level two alert for the province.
“We urge residents to exercise extreme caution during this time and to move away from areas that are prone to devastation by floods,” said the Premier.
