A police officer has been gunned down outside his home in Phoenix, north of Durban but not before shooting and killing the armed suspect.
The SAPS said that the Warrant Officer, who lived at Alfawood Place in the Woodview area, was about to leave for work at the Phoenix Police Station on Sunday when the gunman got out of a white car and opened fire on him.
Police said despite being shot several times, the officer managed to return fire, killing the suspect on the scene.
The policeman, however, also died outside his home while those inside the vehicle sped away.
The motive for the attack is yet to be established.
The office of the National Commissioner instituted the 72-hour activation plan to track down those behind the policeman’s murder.
