Two Kovsie students, who were arrested for allegedly running over another student at the Bloemfontein campus, were driving a vehicle with false number plates. A University of the Free State statement says Muzi Gwebu, a fifth-year student in B.Com Economics, was side-swiped by a bakkie while walking on the campus on Monday evening. He then followed the vehicle to the Armentum men's residence and approached the two occupants. A argument ensued and Gwebu was assaulted by one of the students. He sustained minor injuries. The 22-year old students were traced and arrested on Thursday.
Free State police spokesperson, Chaka Marope says both will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Meanwhile reports have surfaced that the two suspects also tried to drive over three female students before they hit Gwebu. Timeslive reports that the attack was racially motivated being that the suspects are white and the victim black. UFS Vice-Chancellor and Rector, Jonathan Jansen, questioned whether the attack was racially motivated, but said the university is investigating. He condemned the incident in the strongest terms.
