Kovsie students acquitted on all charges

Two Kovsie students, accused of assaulting and attempting the drive over a fellow student, have been acquitted of all the charges against them in the Bloemfontein Regional Court today. Cobus Muller was found not guilty of attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent driving and crimen injuria, while Charl Blom was acquitted on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Magistrate Rasheed Matthews ruled that the complainant, Damane Gwebu, was an unreliable witness who failed to provide corroborating evidence to support his testimony.

Elated and relieved Muller and Blom left the Bloemfontein regional court, followed by friends and family. In his ruling Magistrate Matthews said Gwebu's evidence in chief did not corroborate with what he told police and the doctor who treated him on the night of the incident. He also said the evidence of the State's witnesses were contradictory as they could not say with certainty whether the complainant was in fact bumped by the vehicle as he claimed.

Muller and Blom did not say whether or not they were going to instate any action against the University for expelling them. They were just glad their 6 month ordeal had come to an end.
