Kodwa says anti-doping amendment bill before Cabinet

The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa says the Department is doing all it can to resolve the country's non-compliance with global anti-doping rules.

Addressing a media briefing in Cape Town on Tuesday, Kodwa said this was being done by getting the SA Institute of Drug-Free Sport Amendment Bill adopted expeditiously.

He said the Bill was presented to the Cabinet last week for approval, adding that his cabinet colleagues are fully aware of the implications of continued non-compliance.

Algoa FM previously reported that the government does not have much time to get its anti-doping legislation in line with the requirements of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) or face possible sanctions.

The implications could see South Africa's national teams not being able to compete under the national flag or sing the anthem at matches.

According to Kodwa, the Cabinet has approved the "release" of the Draft Bill for public comment, which he said was an important step in meeting reinstatement conditions set out by the WADA.

Asked about what led to this situation, Kodwa said: " Now is not the time to point fingers, I would have to investigate to get to the bottom of this."
