Khayelitsha rocked by yet another mass shooting

SAPS

The Khayelithsa township in Cape Town has been rocked by yet another mass shooting incident - this time claiming the lives of six people and bringing the total number of people killed to at least 26 fatalities in the past year alone.

AlgoaFM News has regularly reported on deadly incidents in one of Cape Town's biggest townships which has a population of more than 400 000 people.

Sunday night's mass shooting follows the fatal shooting of another six people in March this year.

The deadliest attack in the vast township of Khayelitsha took place in May 2021 when 11 people were shot and killed.

According to a police statement at the time, the 'tit-for-tat' shootings began after the body of the first victim was found in Banzi Street in Site B.

The deceased had sustained several gunshot wounds and a firearm and a substantial amount of cash were found next to him.

"In a second incident that is believed to be a retaliation attack to the first murder, two Somali nationals were shot at.

One died on the scene and the other was seriously wounded and taken to a medical facility," Brigadier Novela Potelwa said.

She said in the RR Section, three other men were shot dead later that same afternoon in a shooting police say was linked to the previous two shootings.

Commenting on the latest incident, Brigadier Potelwa said: "Organised crime detectives have opened murder dockets for investigation following an incident where six individuals, estimated to be in their thirties, were shot and killed in Site C in Khayelitsha on Sunday evening.

Five died on the scene while a sixth victim died on arrival at a local hospital. No arrests have been made yet."

She said a number of murder investigations were underway to address the shootings in Khayelitsha. While the motive for the killings is unclear, its believed that some of them may be gang related.
