Justice finally for "baby Daniel"

The South Gauteng High Court has handed down stiff sentences on a mother and her boyfriend who were convicted for the 2016 death of the woman's three-year-old boy dubbed Baby Daniel.

The mother, who was found guilty on two counts of child neglect, was sentenced to 20 years in jail on Wednesday.

She was found guilty on two counts of contravening the provisions of Section 305, subsection 3A of the Children's Act 38 of 2005.

The woman's boyfriend, who was convicted of the little boy's murder, was jailed for life.

Little Daniel, died a horrific death in 2016 after being severely abused and tortured by the pair.

The lobby group Women and Men Against Child Abuse said the sentences should send a strong message to society.

WMACA founding director, Miranda Jordan, said that they are satisfied with the sentences imposed on the pair by Judge Colin Matshitse saying it was a case of "the brutal torture and murder of a defenceless child".

"We feel that the judge has satisfied, I think, society's expectations ... and we think it will send a strong enough message," she said.
