Joburg fire a great tragedy, Ramaphosa

City of Joburg EMS

President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the deadly Johannesburg building fire that has already claimed over 70 lives, as a great tragedy that will be felt by the families of the victims.

Speaking in Gqeberha on Thursday, he sent a message of condolence to the families of the victims, saying his heart went out to each and every family that was affected.

President Ramaphosa said the tragic fire requires everyone, from emergency services and other government entities, to reach out to survivors and to help restore people's physical and psychological well-being.

He also said he hoped the investigation into the fire would enable communities and authorities to prevent a repeat of such a tragedy.

Authorities reported earlier on Thursday that the death was at least 73, with more than 50 people injured in the blaze that had engulfed a “hijacked” building in the CBD.

Several children were among those who perished in the inferno.
