The Hawks said an off-duty Johannesburg Metro traffic officer died after being shot in a restaurant in the city’s central business district.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, said Mulalo Dathi was with his girlfriend in a restaurant on the corners of De Villiers and Blanket Street on Monday, when four men entered and demanded cell phones from the customers.
He said it’s alleged that Dathi had refused to cooperate, and the suspects fired shots at him.
Ramovha said the traffic officer ran outside but collapsed across the street and was declared dead by paramedics.
“The suspects fled the scene without taking his phone,” he said.
Police are continuing the search for the suspects.
