Jealous man jailed for life for setting ex-girlfriend alight

A 45-year-old man has been jailed for life for the brutal murder of his younger girlfriend whom he doused in petrol and set alight, despite her having a protection order against him.

The National Prosecuting Authority said Ramoula Brown was sentenced in the Mpumalanga High Court on Monday for the premeditated murder of 30-year-old Precious Nomthandazo Mnguni.

The two, who had a child together, had broken up when Brown began to follow Mnguni and beat her up.

She subsequently obtained a protection order.

However, in the early morning of 21 August 2021, Brown went to Mnguni’s homestead on the eDwaleni Trust, in the district of KaBokweni, armed with a canister of petrol.

NPA spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the court heard that he waited for her to come out of the house, then attacked her, dousing her in petrol and forcing her to drink some, before setting her alight.

Nyuswa said the court also heard that the victim's mother heard her daughter screaming and went to investigate, desperately trying to extinguish the flames that engulfed her daughter, who died later in the hospital.

The NPA said it welcomed the sentence imposed on Brown.
