Legendary South African musician Ray Phiri has died.
Seventy-year-old Phiri died in a Nelspruit hospital after a battle with cancer.
Phiri was born in Mpumulanga on 23 March, 1947.
In the 1970's he became the founding member of the Cannibals and when it disbanded Ray founded the band Stimela.
The had gold and platinum-selling albums like Fire, Passion and Ecstacy in 1991, Look, Listen and Decide in 1992, as well as the controversial People Don't Talk So Let's Talk.
Thousands of people tweeted about Phiri's death this morning including the Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthetwha.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of a jazz legend and a one-of-a-kind musician, Ntate Ray Phiri." he said.
