A man accused of killing a four-year-old girl in Brakpan appeared in the town's Magistrate's Court on Monday where his case was postponed to January 7.
Police said earlier that the 23-year-old man had confessed to the crime and lead police to where her body was hidden under a bed in her father's flat.
A missing person's report was issued on Saturday morning and the police and the community started looking for the girl.
Police spokesperson, Tsekiso Mofokeng, said police interviewed the family and one family member did not give a confident story.
Mofokeng said the man was charged with kidnapping but this was later changed to murder.
Earlier reports said about a thousand people protested outside the court.
