The ANC National Executive Committee reportedly wants President Jacob Zuma to resign.
ENCA reports that if he does not resign, the NEC will remove him.
In a statement after the newly elected ANC NEC's first ordinary meeting at Irene on Thursday and Friday, the ANC would only say, however, that; "The officials, led by president [Cyril] Ramaphosa, will continue their engagement with President Jacob Zuma to ensure effective co-ordination between the ANC and government."
The ruling party further stated that the NEC had resolved on a number of organisational matters, including the suspension of the provincial executive committees of KwaZulu-Natal and Free State and the establishment of interim structures to unite and build the ANC in preparation for provincial conferences.
The SABC reports that the ANC NEC has agreed that President Jacob Zuma must step down before the election campaigns for 2019 and that the future of President Zuma now lies in the hands of the ANC's top six officials.
On Saturday, the ANC national executive committee (NEC) named the 20 additional members of the party's national working committee (NWC), with women well represented on the committee.
In addition to the top six officials, the newly-elected members of the NWC are Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma; Lindiwe Sisulu; Naledi Pandor; Jeff Radebe; Angie Motshekga; Derek Hanekom; Edna Molewa; Thoko Didiza; Nomvula Mokonyane; Nathi Mthethwa; Ronald Lamola; Tina Joemat-Pettersson; Dakota Legoete; Senzo Mchunu; Zizi Kodwa; Tony Yengeni; Bathabile Dlamini; Nomaindia Mfeketo; Barbara Creecy; and Thandi Modise.
The presidents of each of the three ANC leagues will serve on the NWC in an ex officio capacity.
"The NEC agreed that the ANC must act decisively and with determination to rebuild the bond of trust between our people and the movement, restore the dignity of our movement, and reclaim the moral legitimacy of our movement," said ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule.
The meeting further agreed on the need to forge a social compact among government, business, labour, and communites for economic recovery, drawing on the resolutions of the 54th national conference.
