A convicted offender has made a court appearance for the murder of a female Correctional Services officer at Leeuwkop prison in Johannesburg.

The National Prosecuting Authority says 30-year-old Nigel Marais was charged with the murder of 50-year-old Eunice Moloko, whose body was found inside the female toilets at the prison's Covid19 unit.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says Marais is currently serving an 18-year sentence for a KZN murder and attempted murder.

The case was remanded to 26 August for further investigations.

The Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Nkosi Holomisa said the circumstances that led to Moloko’s death must be fully investigated.

He said should investigations reveal that there was negligence on the part of management in the centre, the department will not hesitate to take tough action against anyone implicated.

“We appeal to people to allow the law to take its course and avoid speculations and apportioning blame without facts,” he said.
