The Gauteng Health Department said on Friday it would institute disciplinary action against a staff member involved in the swapping of two newborn babies last month.
The two infants, a boy and a girl were born on the 24 July 2020 in the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg.
According to the department, the little girl's mother realised there was a mistake when she changed her babies diaper and saw that it was a boy.
The department’s spokesperson Kwara Kekana said the hospital has reached out to both families to resolve the matter and offered to counsel the mothers'.
He said both babies will remain at the hospital until results of the DNA reports are received.
He added that the department would continue to engage the families as part of the redress process.
