Improvement in Western Cape dam levels, notably along the Garden Route

The Western Cape Government said continued rainfall over the past two weeks had helped to further increase dam levels in major dams across the province.

According to the latest figures, dam average dam levels had increased to 42.2%.

A year ago they were at an average of 62.5%.

The spokesperson for the province's Department of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, James Brent-Styan, said they've seen some good rainfall recently. He said the current level of just over 42% was much better than two weeks earlier, but not at the same level as a year ago. "The problem is last year this time, it was about 62%, so we're about 20% off [the mark]," Brent-Styan said. "We're not comfortable yet, but things are definitely improving," he said.

As far as the Garden Route was concerned, Bent-Styan said it was the region in the Western Cape over which they were the least worried about.

He said dam levels in the Garden Route area were generally a lot better off than in the rest of the Western Cape. Brent-Styan noted that Knysna was the exception and that there was a level of concern, but they were monitoring the situation.
