The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union says it has moved closer to a wage agreement with the SA Local Government Association.
Imatu and the SA Municipal Workers Union closed the fourth round of talks with Salga in Durban on Thursday.
The union says Salga, representing municipalities, has agreed to a 6.5% across the board wage increase, while IMATU proposed a 7% hike.
Secretary-general, Johan Koen, says negotiations ended with a Facilitator's Proposal which the parties will now take back to their members.
He says while negotiations had been strained at times, the process is an example of what trade unions and local government can achieve if they work together.
