Gauteng police have detained six illegal mining suspects who were allegedly involved in a shoot-out with each in Actonville in Benoni.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, said the arrests were made on Tuesday when police responded to reports of a people shooting at each other in an open field.
He said the men were all foreign nationals.
Dlamini said police seized five unlicensed firearms including a revolver and four pistols, adding that investigations are being conducted into the possibility that 'gangs' might have been responsible for several murders of illegal miners and house robberies in areas in Ekhuruleni.
"One illegal miner had already been injured while police confronted the group. He was taken to the Far East Rand hospital under police guard," he said.
