Authorities urged residents of a town outside South Africa’s financial capital, Johannesburg, to keep an eye out for five roaming lions.
Residents of Fochville, about 30 kilometres south-west of Johannesburg, should be extremely careful and immediately contact authorities if they see the lions, police said Saturday.
“Tracks and dung were found which was confirmed to be that of a lion,” the police statement said.
On Friday night, authorities spotted a pride of one large male lion and four smaller lions at a local farm but lost them again due to difficult tracking conditions at night.
Since there aren’t any nature reserves or national parks in the area, experts believe the lions could have escaped from illegal captivity.
