A 39-year-old Limpopo hunter who allegedly shot and killed a farmworker after he mistook him for a warthog was expected to appear in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said a pair of hunters – man and a woman – were tracking down warthogs at Meisiesvlei farm at night when the incident happened a week ago.
Ngoepe said pair were allegedly hunting for warthogs or “bosvarke” at night at when the man allegedly heard some movements and he fired shots in the direction from where the sound came from.
“It is alleged when they reached the spot they realised they shot a human being. The police were then called in and the firearm used has been taken for ballistic examination,” Ngoepe said.
The deceased, 23-year-old farmworker faJan Railwa died on the scene. He was employed at a neighbouring farm.
The case was postponed last week after the accused’s lawyer failed to pitch up in court.
