The SA Human Rights Commission has expressed disappointment and concern over the escalating violence in several townships in Gauteng.
Since Monday a total of 162 suspects have been arrested for looting of foreign-owned shops- mainly in Soweto, south of Johannesburg.
At least three people have been killed in the violence.
The looting of foreign-owned shops began on Monday, after an alleged teenage robber was shot dead - allegedly by a foreign national.
The Institute for Security Studies said the violence in Soweto had more to do with large groups of people exploiting the situation to enrich themselves, rather than xenophobia.
