Mpumalanga police said DNA tests would be conducted to determine whether the human remains found in Kruger National Park on Thursday were that of a missing park ranger.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the grim discovery was made not far from where 51-year-old Checkers Mashego was last seen by colleagues on 17 November.
He said police were notified of the discovery by KNP management and forensic experts collected the remains which will undergo DNA tests.
Mdhluli said other items used by field rangers were also recovered at the site and it is believed that it might be the one which was used Mashego.
Mdhluli says the investigation into his disappearance continues.
The field ranger, with 10 years experience, went missing on Tuesday, 17 November in the Stolsnek section of the Kruger National Park while on routine patrol.
At the time authorities said he was in full ranger uniform and had a rifle, cell phone and two-way radio on him.
