Twelve learners and the driver of a private scholar transport mini-bus died when their vehicle was involved in a horror accident in Merafong near Carletonville on Wednesday.
Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona says it is alleged that the learners' mini-van was hit from behind by a bakkie, causing it to overturn and catch fire.
He says 11 of the deceased learners attended Rocklands Primary School and one was from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville.
Mabona says eight learners have been rushed to medical facilities for urgent medical attention.
He says the horrific accident occurred at around 6.45 am.
The MEC Matome Chiloane says he is profoundly saddened by this tragic event and will be visiting the scene and both schools on Wednesday.
"The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners. We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and both schools' entire community during this incredibly difficult time. We also wish all injured learners a speedy recovery" he said.
Counselling services will be made available to all staff and learners from both schools to cope with the emotional aftermath.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
