Gqeberha police have arrested a suspect and recovered a firearm following a shootout between suspected hijackers and a private security company in Algoa Park.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said it is alleged that a meat truck was hijacked in the Swartkops area on Tuesday afternoon, and it is believed that the suspects used a jamming device to ensure that the truck could not be traced by a tracking device.
She said a private security company was searching for the truck and notice it in Dyke Road in Algoa Park.
“As the truck was then traveling in Ditchling Street towards Young Park, they [the suspects] noticed the private security company vehicle and fired shots at them,” Captain Janse van Rensburg said.
The company’s guards returned fire and the suspects lost control of the truck and it collided with four motor vehicles before it came to a stop just off the road.
Captain Janse van Rensburg said two suspects fled the scene and a third, who was wounded in the stomach, was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police confiscated a jamming device and a 9mm firearm.
Cases of hijacking, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearm and ammunition are under investigation.
“No one in the vehicles was injured and a case of hijacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition have been opened for further investigation.”
