Hawks target rhino poaching kingpin

The head of the Hawks, Anwar Dramat, says a suspected rhino poaching kingpin could be nabbed soon.

Briefing parliament's police portfolio committee, Dramat hinted that shortly there would be a significant achievement, relating to a person he said was high up on the criminal value chain.

He said that those on the bottom rung of the syndicate ladder, such as poachers and drivers, would be targeted by police, while the Hawks were interested in catching those who benefited financially from rhino poaching.

This year, more than 730 rhino have been killed for their horns by poachers in South Africa.

The number of poaching incidents in the Eastern Cape are the highest so far at 14.

This week, the horns of two rhinos were removed from animals at Kwantu Game Reserve in the province.
