A 44-year-old female Hawks officer has been killed in a shootout with a gang of cash-in-transit robbers in Mahikeng in North West province.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said that members from the Hawks and National Intervention team responded when the gang, in two vehicles, used explosives to attack the cash-in-transit vehicle on Thursday morning.
"The suspects fled in both vehicles without taking any money. A high-speed chase ensued towards the Mahikeng CBD."
"Police lost track of the suspects in the Mercedes Benz, but the chase for the Ford Ranger continued until Mahikeng, where a shootout took place between the suspects and the police in the CBD," said Naidoo.
The Hawks member was killed after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head while three civilians were also wounded during the shootout, he added.
No arrests have yet been made.
