Hawks boss, Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya, has directed a multi-disciplinary team to investigate the murder of one of their own officers who was gunned down on a Gauteng freeway.
National spokesperson, Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, said Lieutenant-Colonel Frans Mathipa, was on duty when he was shot and killed whilst driving on the N1 highway near the Hammanskraal Toll Plaza on Sunday night.
She said he was “conducting investigations” when he was wounded in the head and lost control of his vehicle which ended up in a ditch.
Brigadier Mbambo said a case of murder was opened at Hammanskraaal SAPS and this will be investigated by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team.
She said General Lebeya has condemned “the senseless killing of one of the dedicated officers,” adding that he was a devoted investigator who specialised in probing cases related to Crimes Against The State.
“Those who attack police officers are a threat to the country and we are confident that the investigation team will do diligent work in apprehending those responsible,” he said.
